It was May 2020, which means something now, but perhaps someday in the future, the significance will be lost to time. A friend who books the Blue Llama Jazz club was trying to book small acts that they could stream while trying to keep things going during the beginning of the Covid 19 pandemic. A few months earlier if someone asked me to play a solo show I would have probably just suggested one of the groups I play with. In fact, someone once asked me if I saw myself as more of a solo performer or group performer and I quickly answered group performer. But it was May 2020 and full-on gigs were not an option.
I had been accompanying modern dance classes from my basement, which for all its drawbacks, had some benefits. Not driving to campus was great. Walking downstairs with my coffee was nice. Having all my instruments at my disposal lead to me adding all sorts of sounds I wouldn’t normally bring to class.
I had also been working on some music that used tabla compositions on the drumset and some compositions to accompany the tabla repertoire that I had been learning. All this went into these improvised sets. These improvisations are like different paths. I typically have an idea where the start of the trail is and where it might end up but all the individual twists and turns are unique. Some ideas I've walked down a lot. Some are rabbit trails I haven't noticed before.
